Opera Rolls Out Native Ethereum Wallet on PC Web Browser

Opera, one of the most popular web browsers in the world, will add a native Ethereum wallet to the desktop version of its web browsing software.

The new feature was announced in a private release circulated on Wednesday, with Opera citing an “overwhelmingly positive response” to the beta version of a built-in Ethereum wallet for its mobile browser, which supports both Ether and Ethereum-based tokens.

In order to access the built-in desktop crypto wallet, users must first download Opera’s mobile browser on an Android device and enable the native cryptocurrency wallet. The mobile browser wallet gets synced to the PC browser wallet when users scan a QR code.

Keys to the wallet are stored locally on a user’s phone rather than on a server, so all transactions have to be confirmed through the mobile device. When a user wants to make a transaction such as sending a payment, they must sign all transactions, including those conducted through the PC browser, by swiping their finger on their phone’s built-in fingerprint reader.

Opera’s new built-in crypto capabilities go beyond wallet functionality; the browser also acts as a decentralized application (dApp) browser, enabling users to interact with dApps like Augur and CryptoKitties, eliminating the need for third-party extensions or applications.

Krystian Kolondra, EVP of Opera’s browser division, said that Opera “wanted to find the perfect solution for PCs” after receiving positive feedback about their mobile wallet. “We realized the best way is to utilize our new mobile crypto wallet technology and to give our PC users access to it,” he added.

Crypto mining giant Bitmain paid $50 million to purchase a controlling stake in Opera in July.
