IT Giant Fujitsu Releases Blockchain Platform for Retailer Promotions

Fujitsu, one of the largest information and communication technology (ICT) companies in Japan, has revealed a new blockchain-based promotional platform for retailers.

The Japanese ICT giant unveiled its new cloud-based Fujitsu Intelligent Society Solution Blockchain Asset service via a June 6 press release. Aimed at retailers and other consumer-focused businesses, the new platform will allow companies to attract new customers by offering coupons, stamps, and loyalty points through QR codes placed for a limited time across “tourist sites, markets, and shopping centers.”

Shoppers can collect rewards by scanning QR codes with their smartphones, and redeeming them at participating companies located nearby. Data on promotions and transactions is linked with user information, stored on the blockchain ledger, and provided to retail partners, all with the aim of drawing in new customers.

Although Fujitsu stated that users will be able to safely and easily access the system regardless of their knowledge of blockchain, they did not state whether users would have to download a mobile app to take advantage of the coupons offered.

Fujitsu aims to exhibit the service at Interop Tokyo 2018, held in Makuhari Messe in Chiba, Japan from June 13 to 15. It will become commercially available in the third quarter of 2018 and will cost 1.5 million yen ($13,630) per month. Fujitsu aims to sell 100 packages by the end of March 2020.
